The province of British Columbia is breaking new ground with its innovative, decentralized model for mental health care. Based on a best practice standard that includes replacing large tertiary institutions with smaller, more home-like facilities, 800 beds at Riverview Hospital are currently being phased out, as patients transfer into new specialized, community-based facilities. BC’s health authorities are working together to develop new tertiary level mental health beds located throughout the province.

This visionary initiative will improve access to specialized mental health care by increasing system capacity and reducing the need for travel. In fact, some BC patients have already begun to benefit from these smaller, more personalized health care settings and the positive impact that comes from being closer to family and friends.
